Water, Water, Everywhere?

A Drought/Water Conservation Program for Homeowners, Master Gardeners, and Extension Agents

Water, Water, Everywhere? is a set of three training units that cover many issues related to drought and water conservation. The two topics are closely related. In states like Florida, increasing population puts greater strain on the ability of utilities to supply as much water as people are accustomed to using. When drought sets in, as it did in 1998-2003, the competition for water between urban, commercial, and agricultural sectors becomes more intense. In a state like Colorado, where water is more limited and which has been challneged for several years with drought, balancing the water demands of these sectors is a way of life. All citizens must learn to appreciate the value of water as a resource and to use it more wisely.

The components of Water, Water, Everywhere? are:

  • Water,Water Everywhere? Teacher's Guide
  • Unit 1: Introduction to Drought (lesson plan and workbook)
  • Unit 2: Water Conservation (lesson plan and workbook)
  • Unit 3: Landscapes and Drought (lesson plan and workbook)
  • Water,Water Everywhere? PowerPoint Presentation
  • "Water's Journey -- Hidden Rivers of Florida" video and viewer guide
  • Nine Public Service Announcement scripts
  • Drought-Tolerant Plants for North and Central Florida
  • Toolkit for Implementing a Community-Based Training Event
  • "How to Water Your Lawn" poster

Units can be used individually for briefer more targeted programs, or together to create a more comprehensive workshop. Read more about these materials and download them in the table below.

 Water,Water Everywhere? Teacher's Guide

The teacher's guide contains materials which an instructor can use to plan a program. It includes a session outline and a complete list of learning objectives for all unit sections, a list of resources, participant evaluations, and PowerPoint summaries for all units. In addition, all PowerPoint slides are reproduced full-page for use in making overhead projection sheets or as a flip-book in a small-group activity.

 Unit 1: Introduction to Drought

Unit 1 is the basis of a good, all-purpose session on drought and water conservation. It covers the basics of drought and offers many practical tips on conserving water. The workbook includes a fact sheets on home appliance water usage and "Be Water Smart," a list of fifty tips for water conservation. Pre- and post-tests and participants evaluation are included.

 Unit 2: Water Conservation

The focus of Unit 2 is creating landscapes that are "water smart." The main components of this landscaping approach include proper choices in irrigation, plant type, and plant placement. Participants are introduced to the concept of Xeriscaping. Pre- and post-tests and participants evaluation are included.

 Unit 3: Landscapes and Drought

Unit 3 is the most extensive of the the three and discusses in-depth how to help landscapes cope with drought and how to help them recover after drought. Topics covered include irrigation practices, cultural practices for specific kinds of plants, signs of plant damage, plant placement, and plant care after drought. The unit encourages participants to learn from drought experiences and make changes to their landsacpes what will make it more drought-tolerant.

 Water,Water Everywhere? PowerPoint Presentation

This presenation contains the PowerPoint slides for all three units.

"Water's Journey -- Hidden Rivers of Florida" video and viewer guide

This video focuses on Florida, but it is about a problem that is occuring all over the world -- the excessive demand people place on limited water supplies.
